Altadena Party Down

I don't get out much after dark so I'm no expert on night life. But I think we can all agree that Altadena is not known as a party town.

The Coffee Gallery stays open for live music in the back room. The Rancho Bar stays open for - well, for being the Rancho Bar. And...what else? Most nights Altadena's downtown is a sleepy place. That's the way we like it.

But this Friday night, May 15th, downtown Altadena (there's a downtown?) is gonna stay up 'til 9:00! Yes, I said NINE O'CLOCK! Don't call the cops because they'll already be there. From 4-9 PM it's an open house of the North Lake Avenue Business District between New York and Altadena Drives, sponsored by the Altadena Arts Coalition, "a coalition of local artists and business owners dedicated to improving Altadena's economy and culture," so says their flier.

The flier also promises an art opening at the Coffee Gallery, an antique car show at Ronnie's Automotive, twenty minute portraits at Altadena Junction and more. Webster's will be open in all of its parts, and rumor has it that Amy's Patio Cafe will be open for dinner (like I said, that's a rumor--hope it's true).

Oh--and I'll be there. Several bloggers have been invited. Confirmed blogger attendees include Debbi of Altadena Above It All and Altadena Daily Photo, Karin the Altadena Hiker, Tim of Altadenablog and Susan C of Open Mouth Insert Fork and Cancer Banter. (If/when I know of more I'll post them here.)

So I'm excited to be going out after dark. In Altadena. Heck (or should I say shucks?), I have a feeling that once us bloggers get loose up there, Altadena's going to be famous for its night life.

Enjoy, Petrea! 9:00pm closing time is a great way for Altadena to dip its night life toe into the water.

Wow. Out with the grown-ups hey?! Have a great time. I must say this place looks so inviting.

Is this a real nine o'clock ending time? I keep getting faked out by local time here; I show up at say, 7:30 for something that's technically over at 8, and they're already deep into clean up (that would be the South Pasadena farmers market, which I adore).

Lord have mercy. The Alatadena Bloggers will party till the cows come home I'm sure. We will need someone to stay sober enough to photograph the shinanigans !
Anyone? anyone????

I'm not in charge but I imagine it'll last all the way 'til 9. (Not much later for me, though, because I get sleepy.) Virginia, there aren't a lot of cows in Altadena but we'll party 'til the horses come home, and at least one rooster. I'll take pictures for sure.

Jean, that's no good about the South Pas market. With people having to come after work, it's too bad they shut down early.

Goats, I think it is. Party 'til the goats come home, of which there are a number in the Altadena. Chickens, too. Unlike Pasadena, we're allowed some livestock, apparently.

In any case, this event is causing quite the sensation up here in the foothills...!

Y'all have fun. Us Southerners (of South Pas) will have our sidewalks all rolled up by then. But I'm watching "John Adams" on Netflix, so it will be fine by me.

Buy Petrea a beer after 8 o'clock and she just might ask you to call her Kelley and do the dance of the seven veils.

Linda, when I met this gentleman at the blogger picnic he told me there are also llamas. I'll be on the lookout.

Does South Pas close up earlier than Altadena, Margaret? Is that why Jean finds the Farmers Market shutting down at 7:30?

That's right, Karin. Just buy it for me. I don't even have to drink it.

I agree, P: you gals are gonna make AltaDena infamous for its nite life.

I don't think that I would want to live in a "party town".

I haven't been inside the Coffee Gallery in a long, long time.

A few years ago, when I was working on a massive video production and editing project at KPAS, I stopped by Coffee Gallery for hot chocolate and sweet rolls to feed the crew every morning. It kept them very, very happy and motivated!

Oh, and when Tom and I were in Memphis, we went out to dinner every night and closed down every restaurant we patronized! In every single instance, the staff started vacuuming the floors and locking the doors at 9 p.m.

Altadenanians spike the milk at those hoedowns. There's gonna be trouble for sure.

I can see it now. Parents will tell they children - "watch out for those crazy bloggers; they're up to no good."

Maybe we can hit Rancho Bar after our public appearances. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago. Saw an older couple in their 60s making out like freshman. I stared at them like I was a freshman.

Oh yeah, Kris, I don't think anyone in Altadena does, either. Folks are joking because the little downtown area has potential, but needs a boost in the charm department. I love Altadena, though. It's a small town attached to a city.

I can't believe Memphis shuts down at 9!

Susan, our comments must have crossed in the ethernet last night. I admit your description doesn't entice me.
