Tour Heaven and Return

This weekend's pretty much taken care of. Whatever I meant to do yesterday has been put off long enough and I have to do it today. That includes planning next weekend.

Maybe, just maybe, this will be the year I take the annual Bungalow Heaven Home Tour. It's next Sunday, April 26th. If you go, you'll get a peek inside this one, the home of Sarah Hilbert, who ought to know a thing or two about bungalows. She's even written about them for American Bungalow magazine. I'll bet you still have your copy with her article in it.

Sarah sent me an email a couple of weeks back reminding me about the Home Tour and inviting me to take a picture of her house. Her garden won the Pasadena Beautiful Golden Arrow award two years ago, which is the only reason I can think of that she didn't win it this year.

Our little Heaven is more than a local landmark. This year it celebrates placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Not too shabby, no, not these bungalows.

Just like a postcard, Petrea! I especially love those pink overblown-tulip-like flowers in the foreground, whatever they are called. So what do you think, is your soil the right soil for growing a little patch of these?

You must go and show us everything. I love looking around in other people's homes! This one is just perfect and the yard's got some curb appeal!

What a captivating angle of the home and garden.

I manage to go on one of the tours about once every four years and always enjoy it.

I went on a BH tour once, and it's amazing the amount of work most of the owners pour into these houses. Scraping off the new to reveal the old. And they're so proud; they love showing their places off. Well worth the trip, plus the proceeds go to the children's park down the street.

There, that's my PSA for the day.

Shell, they look just like poppies only they're not orange. I could give them a try.

I'm a big snoop too, V! But I've got company coming Sunday.

Susan, I understand from Sarah that the tour is always different. Should be fun.

Merci for the PSA, Hiker.

Sorry -- that was me. I was eating a Mandarin orange & it went down the wrong pipe as I typed.

I was going to delete the spam, but I think I'll keep it now.

You ain't seen nothing yet. I'm having an Irish coffee.

Ooo, pretty. I can see why she wants you to photograph it and why her garden won awards!

Margaret said...

Nice. But I have to say that your title had be really excited for a minute. I guess you were promising a lot. I should have known.

Petrea Burchard said...

I don't think Blogger has runes, J, but have at it.

I know, Marley! Nice, huh? That's why we call it "Bungalow Heaven."

Margaret, Margaret, Margaret. You're a writer, you know about titles. I wanted something snappy, but I settled for something misleading.

Great looking house! I would so love to go on that tour next weekend - heaven indeed! (At least I'm going on a Berkeley garden tour, which might included glimpses of cool houses.) And I really want to see what they come up with for the "Living History Home with costumed actors portraying a family and their activities of the period". You'll have to report back on that house for sure!

Isn't "bungalow" a funny word?

This one is very cozy and looks like fun!

You know Petrea not all poppies are ornage. In my world they are all red. I see one there among the pink ones that's red.

Kris McCracken said...

I quite like the garden myself...

What a wonderful bungalow! The tour sounds great; we'll be looking forward to a full account with photos :>)

Petrea Burchard said...

Wow, Hiker, if you hadn't said it I'd never have thought of it.

Ms. M, Katie, I'm sorry I won't be reporting back. See my note to Virginia. I can't go!

Okay, Vanda. Yeah, I guess I think of soCal poppies as orange. Illinois poppies were always red. Movie poppies are red. Are there purple poppies? It's so hard to google until I get the mac hooked up (tomorrow, I'm hoping).

Hi Kris. Always nice to see you.

John Sandel said...

1. OK, Altadena Hiker owes me at least a dollar.

2. Wikipedia sez that "[bungalow] derives from the Hindi baṅglā (or perhaps the Gujarati variant baṅglo), meaning 'Bengali,' used elliptically for a 'house in the Bengal style.'"

(I'm not sure how elliptical the use is … in linguistics it would be called an associative formation.)

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks for the Wiki info, J. That's for Christie.

I don't know why the Hiker owes you a dollar. We still haven't heard any Gaelic from you.
