A Taste of San Marino

Yesterday I stopped to grab a sandwich at the Fresh Gourmet on Huntington Drive in San Marino. I couldn't resist a shot of these bicycles parked out front. I want the turquoise one.

I've recently begun rehearsals for The Mystery Plays at the Still Speaking Theatre in San Marino. The rehearsal period is a busy time, so I have a feeling we'll be seeing more San Marino shots here for a while.

It is your color, Petrea.
Enjoy your new play.
Today two of your posts are showing up, and now comments are possible.

Cool photo; both bikes remind me of my first one, which was deep blue. I had those little plastic fringes that I stuck into the holes on the handgrips; ah, those were the days.

Re: whether I let the New York couple in on the reason behind my "excellent English," I did. They were surprised that they lucked out and got an English speaker the first time they asked for help, though honestly, many people speak English here.

Hi Dina. I'm glad you can see a bit more in your browser. I hope they'll have it fixed soon.

I posted this in yesterday's comments and I'll add it here: Here's what blogger's saying about (what I think is) this issue:

"If you have a customized template or have inserted some 3rd party code into your template, your embedded comment form may not appear as normal. — latest update on Friday, September 26, 2008"

I think a lot of us have 3rd party code (like the copyright logo or Zazzle stuff).

You should really get yourself a sweet ride like that. And maybe one of those kid carriers to pull Boz in.

Cool bikes! This photo looks very Parisian to me, although the Velib rental bikes here don't look this fun. If you do ride around on one, don't forget to clip a playing card on with a clothespin to get that great thwapping sound!

ben may want 1 of those bikes - he needs a new 1.

thanks Petrea 4 going out of the area occasionally to bring us a pic of how other people live across our border.

I'm excited about the play and the movie and all that stuff.

I have my eye on a green retro Schwinn at the place on Mission in So. Pas.

Hmm, I'm not seeing your profile picture, Dina. This will never do. I hope it's fixed soon.

Bibi, I suppose they can be excused for being surprised to meet an American when they step off a boat in Belgrade! But it was a funny story.

Ben, I don't think Boz would stand (or sit) for it.

Katie, you're brave to Velib en Paris! I'm enjoying your adventures.

Ben can have the pink one, Cafe.

Thank you, Miss H. If we each get bikes perhaps we can ride together (sidesaddle, as proper ladies do).

I want the one with the pink tires!

If you ever have enough time during your break, you should bring your sandwich over to Lacy Park on Virginia Road in San Marino. Great photo opps there too.

Forget the Lacy Park suggestion - I just remembered that they charge non-residents $3.00 for weekend admission.

Oh, Yay! I love hearing about the play, and I already detoured through the link you gave to find out more. Great to see that the director is an old industry veteran, and the play sounds like it could be a goodie. Multiple characters ought to be a good stretch too. Anything you want to show and tell will be a treat.

As for bikes, I just ordered one for myself at the local hardware store a couple of weeks ago. They're still waiting for the fenders, rear rack, and helmet to arrive, so it's sitting in their back room unassembled. The bike manufacturer reserved the better colors (lusterous beige, called Champagne, and a good forest green) for the men's type frame, which I didn't want. So, since I'm not a turquoise person, I got the lusterous pale pink! It will have black fenders and Baby Boomer seat, and a matching rear rack. I'm embracing it as mid-life ultra-fem. The helmet will be white, but maybe I'll go to work on it with some nail polish. I may have to invest in a tiny black dog or two, as well. Just as accessories. Accessories to fashion crime, in Manure-Flecked Willits.

I was wondering about that theater! How great!

Oh, and the bikes... I have the most wonderful retro pink Townie. Jealous? :-)

Hope said...

I love this photo and the colors! Also, I would love to have the bike with the pink tires!

Christie said...

Oh, I love the pink one!!!!! And I would definitely need one of those bells that sing out, "Brrrring, brrrring"!

I hope you have great rehearsals this week and that things go smoothly!

Virginia said...

Petrea, Glad to be able to leave a comment again! Great news about your new play. Wish i lived close enough to come for opening night. U.S., your bike and the nail polish accessorized helmet sound divine. Your two could be a real pair on the streets of CA>

"I want the turquoise one."

I had the same thought! ^_^

A play? Wish I could see it :(

Petrea Burchard said...

Saretta, you're going to have to dither with Ben over the pink bike. Now that I read through the comments I see Hope and Christie also opting for the pink. We're going to need extras.

Thanks, Susan, I'll keep that in mind. San Marino is a high-end town!

Elaine, I picture you in your fashion crime get-up (and your little dogs, too!). As Virginia says, it would be a hoot to ride together. I think I'd honestly go for a pale yellow, but there wasn't one to photograph. Ben has suggested the kid-carrier for Boz, so I'll give it another thought. But when it comes to the helmet I'm torn.

Laurie, I'm jealous indeed! For all my talk I confess I'm dying to get a bike yet scared as well. Too many friends in scrapes. What's your experience in these parts?

Virginia, sounds like Blogger got the problem fixed. I'm glad to see you.

Ted! I cede it to you. I'm gonna need one with armor.

Hmmm, maybe we can arrange a biking blogging dinner theater party (without the bikes).

This is Sgt. Hammerschlobber of the Los Angeles County Police Department, Division of Unilongitudinal Vehicular Enforcement, Special Digirati Detail.

(I have to say that every time.)

Just to remind you wacky internet kids that Statute 2008-B, Chapter 23, Subsection G, Paragraph, um, 2? Or is it 3? Christ, I hate these leatherbound books. Um, yeah—Paragraph 2, um, clearly states:

"It shall be an offense and sully upon the face of the public interest for any person or other animal to operate, cause to be operated or speculate blogolistically about the operation of any digital textual advice whilst [WTF?] perambulating, piloting, steering, guiding, wobbling, driving or otherwise being intentionally conveyed upon any two or three-wheeled vehicle, whether human-powered or motor-assisted, upon the public thoroughfares of the cities, towns or other sizeable domicilic settlements of the aforesaid County, namely of Los Angeles, while we know about it. So there.”

So, kids,, just a word of caution from your friendly neighorhood killjoy: Don’t ride and blog. It’s against the law. Or at least the statute. I.e., you can text, but you can’t hide. We’ll find you. We’ll take you down to the station. We’ll make you drink bad coffee. And then we’ll make you look at our computer, ’cause now every time we turn it on, ever since our girlfriend’s nephew came over for Easter weekend that one time, it make this funky grind-y sound whenever we try to save anything. I mean … that’s not right, is it?

Is it?

I like the bicycles, too, and how they echo the arch in the background. Nice photo! I can just see you with the turquoise one...

Hope you tell us more about the play, and your part in it. My husband & I go to a lot of the local productions (in Boise).

Great post. I remember in the late '70s LA that color or close to it was very popular with the sorority girls set at USC. I had a 10-speed & part of it got stolen - I think the front wheel/or the bike & the wheel was left...

I'm also looking forward to seeing you in the play! I did wonder over to your "actor" web page a few weeks ago & had lots of fun viewing clips & stills. BTW - I liked the minimalist photo of the rail/building yesterday - did I leave a note already?

Marylène said...

Tell us more about your play, I can't figure out what it is from the English title.
I love bikes too, it is just that, after some rides in Paris 25 years ago, before bikers lanes were set, I am now scared to death just thinking of me on a bike !!!

USelaine said...

Let's see. If I get my bike by Thursday, I might be able to make it to San Marino in time for the final performance... Guaranteed, I'm gonna smell bad... I'd have to abandon my blog... Hmmm. I'll try and get back to you on this...

Cafe Observer said...

@ anonymous- who's Bernie the K? He's a young guy without a blog.

Is he drunk? I doubt it. It's illegal to drink & blog according LA County law which he should know, aka Havishim's law.

Rosie said...

Fantastic shot Petrea.
And you are so right, the torquoise one is gorgeous!

Thérèse said...

Just hoping that we will get a few of these play's lines with your pictures...

Petrea Burchard said...

Thank you! I'll be glad to share more about the play as we go along. We've only begun rehearsals so I don't know much yet myself. And I do want you locals to come!

Havisham's Law: don't drink and blog.

Bernie K's Law: don't drive and blog.

Anon: We welcome Bernie, just as we do you, grammatical and punctuational errors notwithstanding.

Kim said...

They look SOooo comfy.
I'm glad we'll be visiting San Marino with you. I never think of it as separate from Pasadena. I's all "old money" as the Orange Countians I grew up among used to say. And, so beautiful.
Congratulations on the play, and I'm excited to read you will give us a peek at the process the cast goes through to prepare.

Katie in Paris, we want photos of you on a Velib! Preferably in motion. I am with you in Paris, Katie, if only vicariously (as are we all).

US Elaine, When they put it together we want a shot of you in full regalia. And, did you know you can mount a laptop between the handlebars, not withstanding the LA Law prohibiting ANYTHING going on between the handlebars, you COULD make that coastal ride, keep up Willits Daily Photo, AND be there for opening night. Perhaps we could sponsor you? Well, the rainy season is coming (if we HAVE any predictable seasons anymore), so you might think of a bike rack on the car and driving down. It's ALWAYS sunny in San Marino, right Petrea?

Except today, Kim. We even had about a minute of rain! It was gorgeous.

By the way, Katie, I'll send Kim that velib photo.
