Theme Day: "No" Signs

The first of every month, the City Daily Photo Blog community shares a theme day. July 1st's theme is "No" signs.

You know, it's not like we're way out in the country here. This sign is about a hundred paces beyond an entrance to the Angeles National Forest. This particular entrance is, oh, about a quarter mile north of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.

So yeah. No shooting. Please.

172 blogs are participating in theme day this month. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

As you can imagine for me this sign is very funny. As you probably know, in England not even the Police carry guns.

Don't mean you can't pack some heat, just don't go shootin' 'em off, z'all.

I'd dearly love to take aim at yesterday's spammers, but only you P. have the proper ammo to delete 'em. Stay safe.

Great shot. did I just say that?

Is a bow and arrow considered shooting?

Hi Petrea,

The bees are back in Brookville, Ohio. I hope for the rest of the year at least. I even got one on my Better Blog Writing post today. LOL

I see you found an adorable No sign. It is funny.

Isn't it almost funny to think of adult people scurrying around their communities taking pictures of signs. And if somebody had asked what that is all about and you said a sign with "no" on it, they might... well. It is kind of funny.

Good theme day photo! It's a little disconcerting that a sign like that became necessary.

You can shoot so many things. How about a photograph?

You can use a bow and arrow during deer hunting season. I once saw a hunter on a mountain bike on Sunset Ridge. Don't know how he planned on strapping down a deer onto a mountain bike.

If I recall, I think there is an interesting story behind Brown Mountain.

Hey, I have a friend who's a rocket scientist at JPL! But I digress. Great photo! And they seriously have to say "No Shooting" where you are?! How bizarre.

Happy Theme Day!

The reason for the "No Shooting" is that by default, in National Forests, which are usually pretty far from populated areas, it is legal to hunt, and shoot at targets... LA just happens to have its Nat. Forest right up against a large populated area...

It has been an eye-opener today to see so many gun related signs, for as Rose says someone from the UK. The pity is we should have no knives as that seems to be the weapon of choice.

At first I thought it said "no shouting" Wow, I'd really be in trouble then.

Petrea Burchard said...

Rose, it's one reason I'm an anglophile. I believe your gun crime statistics are much lower than ours, too. I wonder why?

Elaine I'm a doofus for not realizing they were spammers. I hesitate to delete a negative comment because folks have a right. But I want to protect commenters from clicking on spam, so out it goes. Thanks for letting me know. I didn't get it.

Yes Miss H., it is.

Good for the bees, Abe! The world still has a lot to do for them.

I thought so too, Keith, but see the comment by anonymous below.

The irony is, Jim, that I shot the sign.

Maybe he was shooting bunnies to carry in his bike basket, Palm. Hey, click on Palm's link. That story about Brown Mountain is a great post that leads you in enticing directions.

d.c.: Maybe my rocket scientist knows your rocket scientist! Or maybe your friend lives across the street from me!

Anonymous, I hadn't known that. How eerie. But there must be designated areas, no? I mean, folks go camping in those places. That's something I've gotta look up.

Babooshka: Seems some humans will find a weapon no matter what, eh?

Knoxville Girl: HELLO! ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH A GUN? NO SHOOTING PLEASE!

Great find! What does it say about us that we need a sign like that?

marley said...

It doesn't mean No shooting photographs does it?!

Happy Theme Day :)

Gerald (SK14) said...

Like rose, babooshka and marley it is hard to see guns so free in the US (Chuck's Seattle sign seemed especially horrific - took me a while to understand it)

Your shot here though has some humour to it.

Kim said...

Oh man, not another "no photography" zone! ;^) Sorry, Petrea, just had to say it.

You notice it does not say one cannot carry fire arms, it only admonishes not to shoot them! So American.

Your photo makes me want to be out hiking there. I used to spend a lot of time in them thar hills!

Hi Petrea, thanks for your visit and comment on my blog today. I can find nothing about the "No Killing" sign on the web. I'd assume there must be something, but it has eluded me. I totally agree with your sentiments!

Happy Theme Day, though, signs notwithstanding :)

How funny!
(but, Petrea, you just did!) ;)

Must be early in the morning because I didn't see the No Shooting sign there. It took me awhile to pick it up. I guess my eye was focusing on the big sign.

How dare you "shoot" the sign? Bad girl!

Petrea Burchard said...

Kelly, it refers to hunting, but yeah, people should know better!

Marley, with what you guys have been dealing with photography-wise, that's a good question!

Gerald, I hadn't seen Chuck's photo when I read your comment. Thanks for sending me to check it out. (readers, click on chuck pefley, above.) I think Chuck's won the day, although yours stole my heart.

Yeah, Kim, like USElaine said, don't mean you can't pack some heat! So American. I love my country, but this is one thing about it I would love to change.

Chuck: you took the cake.

Christie! So true!

Irina, I guess I got away with it!

Re Designated Places:

In most Natl Forest areas in CA, it is legal to shoot firearms in a safe manner anywhere within natl forests as long as you are not within a certain distance of designated campgrounds or within a certain distance of a road, or where they have posted "no shooting". In the Angeles National forest, this is not the case. You may shoot in two designated shooting areas.

Angeles Natl Forest rules
Los Padres Natl Forest rules

Thanks to improved hunter safety courses the number of injuries or deaths attributable to misuse of this sort of thing is minuscule. (The Brady Campaign claims 649 accidental deaths due to firearms in 2004 which would include all kinds of accidental deaths not just lawful hunting or target shooting related ones).

You have a much MUCH higher chance of dying in a car accident on the drive to your campsite (42836 fatalities in car crashes).

There's no question that gun crimes are a terrible thing, but they are committed by a very different population than the people that this sign is "aimed" at.

Of course, it only takes a small minority of reckless shooters to make the rest of us look bad. if only 1/1000 of the people who carry a gun into national forest areas takes a potshot at a sign it's still a very visible form of bad PR for a long time.

Thank you so much for doing the research and providing statistics and links. It's quite generous of you and it adds a great deal to the blog. I appreciate it very much.

Old eagle eye me was wondering where the "no" was.
Oh....it must be a cryptic "no" on the direction sign?
No?
I don't get it.

ohhhhhh......could it be that big yellow sign?!!
Sometimes I do wonder about myself!

Petrea Burchard said...

There ya go, freefalling. They probably just don't have "no shooting" signs out there in the wild country where you live...

Lindsey said...

This seems photoshopped a bit, as if you censored or the top left/right portions of the sign.

Petrea Burchard said...

That would be some bad photoshopping! No, there's paint on the sign.
