SAD

We've been having gray days.

I looked up Seasonal Affective Disorder. I don't have it, but I can still complain. When the sun ceases to shine, the only symptom they list that I regularly exhibit is lethargy. A good hike would cure me, and a cool day is perfect for hiking.

Alas, not today. A person's gotta make a living. I suppose there are people in the world who get paid for hiking, but I'm not one of them.

Living in Toronto, ON and Harrisonburg, VA means I try not to take our weather for granted - never the less I've already become disappointed if we go more than a day or two without a full day of sunshine.

We're spoiled.

They don't call it "the sunny south" for nothing, at least where I live. But also keep in mind that "they" don't also mention it's the "sunny, hot, allergen-loaded, hard-to-breathe-the-humid-air south".

That sure looks like a fun hike - I like heights - going down 'em better than going up 'em. ;)

Tryphena felt almost entranced by the dismal haze engulfing the cul-de-sac in Rancho Cucamonga. Her ex-husband had taken the Chevy Nova in January, and never returned. She was at the bottom of the last box of Coco Puffs, and with utility payments in arrears, she couldn't get the can opener to work. She found her cleanest underwear, ill fitting though it was, and fished out her hiking boots from the guest room closet. Then, with her expired drivers license in her back pocket, she wandered up to Foothill Boulevard and hitched a ride to Cajon Pass. The driver was glad to be rid of her, what with the smell, and now Tryphena found herself on the precipice – ironically on the Rim of the World Scenic Byway. She gazed down the nameless gorge.

True, Ben, we're spoiled. How come you're always right?

Knoxville Girl, we'll probably breathe better once this clears up. Thanks for reminding me.

USElaine, I don't know where you got that. Maybe you wrote it. It's lovely. You're becoming Bernie's competition for PDP Junior's Official Assistant Blog Poet. (Quite a title.)

Hee hee, Bernie. I almost named the photo "Tuscan Toes." But I know so little about Italian footwear.

Anonymous, I wonder if the clouds would hold her?

Don't jump, Petrea! Those toes look precariously perched...

I know what you mean though. It is so cold. I skipped the Farmer's Market this afternoon because I was too cold to go outside. And I think it's 71 degrees... wimps?

Petrea - That's just me, riffing on the set-up. I yield to the master, Dennis. I mean, bernie.

Isn't this the time of year when So. Cal. has "early morning haze followed by hazy afternoon sunshine"? I do recall May being oddly cold and damp.

I love the added narrative uselaine connected to your photograph. I too might jump if I found myself boxed into a cul-de-sac in Rancho Cucamonga.

I love the colors and paths in the valley.

Pont girl: 71 degrees? I'd have gone. I'm no wimp, my cut-off point is 70.

USElaine, your riffing's beautiful. Please riff here any time.

antjas you're right in a way: we got sun this afternoon. But the last couple of days we didn't. We even had rain (yay!). And last year and this it's been cool late into the year.

Palm, I believe I'd jump, too. Unless I were a poet like USElaine.

I love them, too, Jim. And guess what? So does our local congressman, Adam Schiff. Just heard about this on the news:

Hah! Looks like you're right on the edge -:) If you want persistent gray, try Seattle on for sighs. SAD is a serious thing for a great many people. I'm glad i have to spend so much time editing pictures at my bright monitor. At least I can see and remember vivid blue skies and bright sunshine ... not to mention things like red Italian wine.

Chuck, I have family in Seattle and whenever we visit it's sunny. But they tell me it's usually cloudy there and I trust them.

Grey days up north the last few days, too, Petrea. The forecast keeps saying it will be bright and sunny, but the grey persists over nôtre view of the Bay!

Ah, Louis, Peut-être aujourd'hui.
