Theme Day: Animals

Well, I think it's very weird that a month of 2012 has already passed and it's February 1st, but it is, so it's time for another City Daily Photo theme day. This month's theme is animals.

How do you like my flare? I like it. If you enlarge the picture you might see a couple of contrails in the sky, too.

I'd love to give you exotic animals but Pasadena doesn't have a zoo and I'll be damned if I'm going up into the hills to chase mountain lions. However, if you click on the other participants in today's theme, I bet you'll find some fantastic animals! After all, City Daily Photo is now 1444 blogs strong, worldwide. Our newest member is Jersey Photos from the Channel Islands. And as far as theme day and Jersey Photos goes, let me just say great minds think alike.

    Petrea I think this is the most gorgeous shot I've seen on this theme day. The light and setting are superb and yes I love the flare and sun rays in the dust. Just beautiful.

    Wow, thanks everyone! When I saw the riders I knew they were an opportunity. I didn't realize while I was shooting what a gift the setting sun would be.

    It's lovely the way the dust has diffused the setting sun. Which camera did you use?

    Just to drag things down to a more prosaic level, my first thought was that the rider was carrying a traffic cone.

    Bellis, I couldn't remember but from the looks of the other photos in the group it must have been the Olympus 8 megapixel, not the Canon.

    Very nice! Reminds me of riding in Santa Fe about 10 years ago (and the last I was on a horse). Love the Jersey site. Thanks for passing it on.

    Sometimes I have to pinch myself--I don't actually pinch myself, who does that? I'd be covered with bruises--but it's so pretty here in the foothills of the mountains, and we have the Arroyo, and Hahamongna, a beautiful place to ride, and stables and horses, etc. And we are 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles.

    Bellis, I have no idea how they made it but it's several years old and it still amazes me and makes me laugh.

    Awesome photo -- definitely one of my favorites. As much as I'd love to see a photo of a mountain lion, I'm glad you didn't search them out.

    Katie, this photo of a mountain lion was taken just north of the JPL bridge, about a quarter of a mile from where I shot today's picture just south of the Jet Propulsion Lab. The (locally famous) mountain lion pic was taken during a period when there hadn't been much rain. Mountain lions have a huge range, and only come near humans when they're desperate.

    Just lovely. So much atmosphere in this photograph. I want to be there, riding Western saddle (is that right?) I remember going out riding one time when I lived in California but it's so long ago I forget the saddle but there was somethng in the middle you held on to! At least I did!

    The Western saddle has a saddle horn, Jilly. It's something to grip! Its original purpose was for tying or looping the end of a rope when roping cattle, but it's still useful even if you don't have anything to do with little dogies gittin' along.
