On the first of every month, the City Daily Photo Blog community has a theme day. Today's theme is "metal."July 19th I showed you a destruction site where a building is being torn down. The thing that most impressed me about the work was that as they tore the building apart they were sorting the materials.
Yup. Recycling. Heavy machinery delicately plucked huge pieces of iron and placed them in the "huge pieces of iron" pile, as opposed to the "curly pieces of metal" pile. Shovels piled corrugated metal upon corrugated metal instead of throwing it all into muddled heaps of rubble.
I don't know if they were doing this due to any regulations, but I do know Pasadena City Council voted in 2006 to require that (among other things) all new construction meet LEED standards. Pasadena wants to be a Green City, and it's not just talk.

very cool! I like it a lot. Really interesting perspective.
ReplyDeletePetrea, I just adore this photo. The elegant swirling metal and that yellow whatchamacalit ... all of it together is eye candy. And great that the materials are being recycled instead of just junked. Hooray for Pasadena!
ReplyDeleteHere in Illinois, new schools have to meed LEED requirements to qualify for funding. Of course, Illinois doesn't have any money for the funding anyway, but still, a step in the right (green) direction. Love this shot, Petrea! The razor wire is a little scary, but I love the way the curve of the equipment mimics the curve of the wire!
ReplyDeleteAnd death to anyone trying to interfere with their good work, I see! I guess scrap metal is highly prized these days.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the mixture and swirl of materials here, it's a work of art. So good to know that much will be recycled.
ReplyDeleteGreat angle creates a great photo! Happy theme day :)
ReplyDeletePerfect material for today's theme! And yeah Pasadena! I love that city. It's the only place in Southern California I'd actually consider living.
ReplyDeleteHappy Theme Day!
Janet
I love the light you have captured in this photo Petrea. & I am happy to hear about your communities effort to be green, it's so hopeful.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your vacation, and your reunion!
Ouch! That razor "swirlie" wire hurts just to look at. Taking down a prison? Glad to hear more cities are going in the green direction.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo and good to hear that some cities are waking up !
ReplyDeletenice pic!
ReplyDeletehope all people in the city keep the same attitude
So happy to hear about well-planned demolition. Petrea, how did you manage to make a photo of destruction and razor wire into an uplifting message? Yay!
ReplyDeleteGreat Theme Day photo! I didn't know that about Pasadena. I'll have to see if any other neighboring cities have similar requirements. They should.
ReplyDeleteGood to see the city is taking a step in the right direction.

Petrea, I'm late getting around for theme day. Good post, and good for Pasadena! So much better than shoveling it all in a land fill for future generations to sort out.
ReplyDeleteThank you all.
ReplyDeleteKelly: If we bite the bullet now, we'll save in the future.
Janet: Come on over! But don't move here, because d.c. confidential must live on!
