The first of every month, the City Daily Photo Blog community shares a theme day. July 1st's theme is "No" signs.You know, it's not like we're way out in the country here. This sign is about a hundred paces beyond an entrance to the Angeles National Forest. This particular entrance is, oh, about a quarter mile north of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.
So yeah. No shooting. Please.

As you can imagine for me this sign is very funny. As you probably know, in England not even the Police carry guns.

Isn't it almost funny to think of adult people scurrying around their communities taking pictures of signs. And if somebody had asked what that is all about and you said a sign with "no" on it, they might... well. It is kind of funny.

ReplyDeleteYou can use a bow and arrow during deer hunting season. I once saw a hunter on a mountain bike on Sunset Ridge. Don't know how he planned on strapping down a deer onto a mountain bike.

The reason for the "No Shooting" is that by default, in National Forests, which are usually pretty far from populated areas, it is legal to hunt, and shoot at targets... LA just happens to have its Nat. Forest right up against a large populated area...
ReplyDeleteIt has been an eye-opener today to see so many gun related signs, for as Rose says someone from the UK. The pity is we should have no knives as that seems to be the weapon of choice.

Like rose, babooshka and marley it is hard to see guns so free in the US (Chuck's Seattle sign seemed especially horrific - took me a while to understand it)

Must be early in the morning because I didn't see the No Shooting sign there. It took me awhile to pick it up. I guess my eye was focusing on the big sign.

Re Designated Places:
ReplyDeleteIn most Natl Forest areas in CA, it is legal to shoot firearms in a safe manner anywhere within natl forests as long as you are not within a certain distance of designated campgrounds or within a certain distance of a road, or where they have posted "no shooting". In the Angeles National forest, this is not the case. You may shoot in two designated shooting areas.

Thanks to improved hunter safety courses the number of injuries or deaths attributable to misuse of this sort of thing is minuscule. (The Brady Campaign claims 649 accidental deaths due to firearms in 2004 which would include all kinds of accidental deaths not just lawful hunting or target shooting related ones).
You have a much MUCH higher chance of dying in a car accident on the drive to your campsite (42836 fatalities in car crashes).
There's no question that gun crimes are a terrible thing, but they are committed by a very different population than the people that this sign is "aimed" at.
Of course, it only takes a small minority of reckless shooters to make the rest of us look bad. if only 1/1000 of the people who carry a gun into national forest areas takes a potshot at a sign it's still a very visible form of bad PR for a long time.
