A Day Off

I haven't taken a day off in a long time, perhaps months. I don't remember how long it's been. I've been getting the book ready, plus I stare at the computer screen a lot and trying to drum up ideas (which, in my line of work, is the hopeful equivalent of drumming up business).

But Bellis knows my weakness: "Would Boz like a day at the beach?" she asked.

Boz doesn't have as much energy as he used to, but he's still a dog. Dogs love routine, but they also love novelty (go figure). When I spend all that time at the computer, he naps in his sunny spot. He gets walks, he gets playdates, but he doesn't often get novelty. And he loves the beach.

Who doesn't love the beach?

Huntington dog beach is pooch paradise. Thank you, Bellis, and Abby, too. If I'd gotten a better picture this shot would've had two happy dogs in it.

Update: Kalei's Best Friend sent this fascinating link about the 1960's oil boom at Huntington Beach.

  1. What a perfect day for Boz and for you.

  2. Yay! Every Sunday should be a Bozday.

He sure looks happy, Petrea; maybe just proud that he's outrun the tide, a surfer and an oil platform (nice composition there, by the way).

  4. How lovely! I'm glad Bellis knew the magic carrot to dangle ~ such a beautiful way to re-charge your batteries and give Boz some salt sea air in his fur. Happy Sunday, Petrea.

  6. Good for you and Boz..btw did he let the water touch his paws??

  7. We all got wet but I wouldn't call it swimming. Boz likes to go in up to his tummy. The water was cold at first, but you get used to it. It felt good, and I love the salty, fishy smell. The dogs would have loved to have stayed all day.

Huntington Beach is the original "Surf City."
Does anyone know how long the oil platforms have been there?

  8. They've been there about 6 million years. Oh wait, no, that's the rocks - the platforms were started in the early '60s. It's called the Jones pool. I'm jonesing for a little crude. Sorry, not enough sleep.

  9. I could swear that oil rig is moving closer and closer to the shore.

  10. James, you're making me laugh!

A lot of oil pumping away in that part of the LA sprawl.

It does look like it's moving when you're there, Bellis. Seems like a ship instead of a platform, doesn't it?

  11. Boz really does look happy. Nothing better than a day at the beach to escape the inland heat.

  18. So glad you and Boz got out to the beach. I'm sure he was in "doggy rapture" there. And sounds like it was just what you needed to unwind.

  19. It was just what the veterinarian ordered. And the doctor, too.

Lulu, dogs may not be humans but they are definitely people.

  23. Well, I wonder what Scout would think. She hates water, but it might intrigue her.

  24. Boz doesn't go for swimming pools or sprinklers or hoses, but the ocean has a whole different stink to it. Scout might like it.
