Itchy

I don't know why I like to travel in the fall, but I do. All year long I'm fine right where I am, then November comes around and bam! I've just gotta get out of town. And stay out! You'd think the cops were after me or something.

Put me on a plane and send me someplace. I'm ready for an adventure.

    I feel your itch! [::scratch scratch::] I'm torn between the idea of expansive wilderness, and expensive urbanity these days. Away from American holiday pressures in any case.

    That's it exactly, Elaine. The first Christmas carol I hear in October and I want out. Retail has ruined it for me.

    I am just the opposite, Petrea. But maybe it has to do with weather. Up here in Seattle, it's chilly and the leaves are all orange and yellow and beautiful. It's time to light the fireplace and make a delicious pot of soup. Time to settle in with a good book, and lots of coffee. But I totally understand the itch, and I'm sure you'll find some fabulous place to go. Have you ever been to Lake Arrowhead, up in the San Bernadino mountains? It's very pretty up there.

    I get your itch...but it's getting away from the Xmas hype than traveling, really. I was listening to XM yesterday, where they were listing all the Xmas stations they'd have for my listening "enjoyment". Uh, yeah, no. Hell no!

    But I've got to say, the leaves are starting to turn. A trip up 38 thru SBNF might be nice if there isn't snow to contend with. Or heck, go see The Chieftess & dbdub. Or even a trip out to Death Valley! My friends out in Palm Desert are still wearing shorts if you want a quick escape to warmer climes.

    Me? We're going for a drive this weekend to no where in particular to see the changing leaves after plunking something in the crockpot to enjoy when we return for supper.

    I like all those ideas! I'm putting together an excellent list.

    Yeah, the Christmas hype is part of it. I wish the retailers would understand that one reason their sales are down is that they've ruined it for us.

    Patricia, Pasadena feels just like Seattle today. I love it. I like hibernating this time of year, too. When the weather's nice, travelling across town to the beach is far enough for me. The desert sounds good too. Or maybe a trip to Ojai? Hmmm... maybe the itch is contagious.

    Hi Susan. I'm so glad you are enjoying the fall weather down there in Pasadena. I always think it's a roll of the dice. One year it can be very cold, and the next year you might be able to get away with wearing shorts on Thanksgiving!!

    The first (and sadly) only time I went to Paris was in late October and it was an absolutely wonderful time of year to visit. The weather was cool enough to bundle up in a stylish coat and scarf and gloves to walk around, but not so cold that it was unpleasant. There were almost no crowds and it was such a pleasure to slip into a little patisserie every afternoon and get a warm beverage and something sweet to eat. I think I Paris every fall and vow that one day I shall return.

    Hi, Desdy! Welcome to the blog. You don't know how many times I've gazed down your street and sworn to myself, "when I have my camera with me I'll--" - then the Altadena Hiker beat me to it.
    That doesn't mean I won't do it someday.

    Speaking of someday: Ah, Paris. Not a bad idea if only...

    But Kathy and Dan's, now, that's doable. Somebody call and warn them. And not far from Yosemite, either.

    If you're coming up to Mammoth you'd better come on up this weekend!!! We'll be heading south just about every other day for the next 2-3 weeks...we have a new Grandbaby ready to make her entrance into the world!!!

    Actually, I'm so glad we actually have a weekend at home with no...you got it...NO PLANS!!!! Hallelujah...

    But then, we scratched our travel itch and are still recuperating!!! Keep us posted if you decide to ramble!!!

    Chieftess, don't you worry. I'll probably hit you up in the spring. I want to give you plenty of lead time.

    Bellis, Boz doesn't much like to travel. Why would we do that? Why would we drive so far to hike when we can hike near home? Why would we eat at restaurants when we can eat at home? Why would we stay someplace that's not home when we can stay at home? He finds the whole thing upsetting.

    I don't buy into the heavy material/retail sell of this part of the year. I just keep my emphasis on the fun, faith, friends, food, & family part of this season!

    However, it's the rest of the year with it's emphasis on bad politics/politicians, economic repression, death, wars, selfishness, et al, where I wanna drop out and jump in a big jet plane to try to run away from it all.

    I've never heard of a dog that didn't like to get in the car and go for a ride. And, meet new people when they get to their destination. You'll have to wait until the Spring if you want to use our place as a launching pad to Yosemite. I believe the Tioga pass is closed for the winter and while we are only about 20 miles from Yosemite as the crow flies, this time of year it's about a 7 hour drive.

    Great photo; easy to imagine it being in any number of exotic locations. Fall is definitely a great time to travel although I'm glad to not be going further than 45 miles for the upcoming holidays.

    I hear you, Cafe. I made the mistake of listening to the radio the other day. I won't be doing that again.

    Dubya, Boz loves to meet people. But why don't they come to our house? Or come with us to our trail? He lived in the shelter too long and now that he's got a place of his own he wants to stay there.

    For a world traveler, Katie, you're sticking close to home.
