Zen Monday: #163

In Zen, you learn through experience rather than books or lectures. Zen Monday is the day you experience the photo and tell us what you've learned, rather than me lecturing you about it.

Today I reserve the right to join in the comments when necessary--you know, to add to the experience.

Remember, sometimes you have to look closely.

  1. It looks as if it was put in by an Indian.

Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh of a fuse box , whilst on a tour of a factory in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1999

    More Phillip-isms here http://bit.ly/67bc8

  2. two copies of Kafka on the same shelf as Babe. There is some kind of message here.

  3. I'm deeply disturbed that Babe is out of order (though I can see the slot where it has to go back to).

Dive - that was a classic Prince Philip remark, wasn't it? I thought of it when I saw the imaginative wiring in India

  4. Do those wires also act as rabbit ears for the TV?

  5. been so long since the copy of "Housekeeping" was brought out, the vines overtook the video library.

  6. Bellis, allow me to introduce JB of Mainz Daily Photo. JB, Bellis. Bellis, JB.

It's an easy error to make because although I don't believe JB and Dive have met, they have some erudition in common.

  7. the dead vines are proof my mother is spinning in her grave at a) the selection of videos rather than books and b) the obvious lack of care if vines grew thru the barristers bookcase and died.

wv: fibilled----what happens when one is double-billed by the cable company, the doctors office or the Sparkletts delivery folks

  8. "if we can get this baby up to 88 miles an hour, we can get back to 1955!"

  9. Oi! 'Oo are youz callin' "common"?

  10. And I don't recall being erude either. Not to you, anyway. This could change....

  11. Let's see ... Kafka, Babe, The Sorcerer, Taxi Driver, Strangers When We Meet, a Stanley Kubrick boxed set, and the scariest of all ... Housekeeping! Argh! Run for your lives!

  12. Allright—I'll say it: Hollywood + vine.

  13. Hysterical, JS--
I was leaning towards a digital intervention, myself--

  14. Heck, I'm so sorry, JB. I guess I thought only a Brit like Dive would know about Prince Philip's gaffes. I admire your e-rudition.

  15. Bellis, just about every racist, homophobic and mysogynist remark ever made has at some point or other spouted from the maw of the Mad Greek.

I must say I'm impressed, Petrea; you have managed to track down a DVD collection even creepier than my own.
And yes, I put the "rude" in erudition.

  16. This is hilarious! It takes a special kind of person to file their collection in alphabetical order.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Doesn't everyone file their everything alphabetically? How else do you find things?

  18. Actually, most of these are mine, & my bachelor habit was to organize my movies chronologically, then by director's surname … but everything in marriage is compromise, so alphabetic seemed a good other scheme.

  19. I would love to watch a double feature of Kafka and Babe. Kafka first, of course.

  20. @John...lol, when we got married I had my system, worked great. Have compromised down to alpha filing and a numbering system with a spreadsheet so we know what is missing and to whom it went. But, certainly didn't end up with vines or wires running thru it!

wv: piledpoo...loling too hard to even finish what is running thru my mind!

  21. Movies ripening on the vine. Many good vintages there.

  22. Oh so you still have tapes. I have a drawer full for the kiddos but the VCR is dicey. I hate to have to ditch them. WE have the Grinch, and so many more good ones! waaaaaa

  23. You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking... you talking to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the "bleep" do you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? OK.

They just don't make 'em like they used to.

  24. Some of the VHS tapes don't exist on DVD. Some we haven't replaced yet. Some we never will.

See? I'm not the only one who has to have things organized. (Thank you, Trish.) When we got married I suppose I could have learned all of film history, but since we both already knew the alphabet it seemed a decent compromise.

A double-feature of Kafka and Babe. Sweetie, we ought to have a movie night!

  25. True dat—I'm confident none of our neighbors has a factory-original "Toto le Hero," or Peter Brook's "King Lear." Jeez, we've got to get some of those VHSes digitized.

  26. Come on, PA, I'll bet yours is as weird as ours.

Here's the deal: we had our cable TV shut off the day after Mr. Obama's inauguration (didn't want to miss that) and we stuck the TV in a closet. Since then, we occasionally watch a DVD on a computer monitor but we've been doing so less and less.

...And our prolific jasmine vine found its way in through a basement window. I thought nothing of it until Karin, the Altadena Hiker, was looking for a copy of Toto the Hero. There is apparently but one copy extant in California and its ours.

I opened the built-in cabinet where we keep our videos and DVDs. The vine had found its way up from the basement. It didn't have much color to it (there's no sun in the cabinet) but it was otherwise healthy.

Thanks for commenting today. I suggest you all go alphabetize your bookshelves.

You evidently haven't seen "High Fidelity" 8 times. Or even once.

  28. JB, whatever works. But that character will have to come up with something else if he ever wants to share his collection.

  29. I see Star Wars, so, of course, I approve.
